Ban On Led Signs In Denver Moves To City Council

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

The City Council’s Blueprint Denver committee has initially approved a new ban on LED billboards in Denver. It now must move on to the City Council for a final vote.

Denver currently has only three LED units, and a total of 550 billboards in the city limits.

But Denver is no stranger to permit and code problem disagreements with sign owners. There are currently no less than 11 lawsuits in court over various billboards in Denver. And this issue may also end up in court depending on the council’s vote.

Judge Rules That Town Can Unplug Lamar’s Led Billboard

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

A Traverse City, Michigan judge has ruled that the BlairTownship can unplug an LED billboard owned by Lamar Outdoor Advertising.

The billboard was operating under legal non-conforming “grandfathered” status, but the township claims that Lamar lost its right to operate the sign when they violated the grandfathered status with the installation of a LED unit.

“Because Lamar has spent, well, multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars on this sign … I kind of hate to saw it down given the fact that they’re likely going to appeal” said Judge Thomas Power. But he did the township authorization to turn its electricity off, thereby rendering the LED unit useless.

Lamar has threatened the town that, if it turns off the lights, and if it wins on appeal, it will seek restitution for the lost revenue from the township.
