Colt .45 Billboards Have Detroit In Uproar
Friday, November 20th, 2009Colt .45 Malt Liquor billboards, showing a cartoon character of Billy Dee Williams, with the slogan “works every time” have been getting more than their fair share of attention from the Detroit City Council. The Council is very unhappy about the new campaign. “This is killing our community” said Council member JoAnn Watson. The billboards are “an issue of racism and perversity” she said.
The Council is looking at options to control the content on billboards in Detroit, so that this might not happen again. Billy Dee Williams has been a spokesman for Colt .45 for over twenty years, and the slogan “it works every time” has been around that long, as well. Similar billboards have appeared in Detroit in the past, only not in a cartoon format. A spokesman for Miller Brewing, which makes Colt .45, as well as for CBS Outdoor, which operates many of the billboards in Detroit, declined to comment.
