Tampa City Council Scales Back Digital Billboards

The City of Tampa City Council offered a scaled back digital sign offering following a motion by councilman John Dingfelder. The city had been preparing to vote on allowing Clear Channel Outdoor and CBS Outdoor to install 16 digital signs each on interstate highways and roadways of their choosing, when Dingfelder made the motion that the number be lowered to 6 digital signs each. Freedom Of Speech Arguments Fall Short Of Saving Oakland Billboard.

 A Federal Appeals Court has ruled that the City of Oakland was correct in removing an illegal billboard last year. The decision may end seven years of litigation in which the billboard company, Desert Outdoor Advertising, had maintained that it had the right to keep the billboard on East Ninth Street based on Freedom of Speech protections. Billboard Coalition Sues L.A. City Attorney

A lawsuit has been filed against the Los Angeles City Attorney to bar him from arresting sign law violators and setting excessive bail.

The suit was filed by the President of three outdoor companies and a property rights group. It comes after Keyvan Setareh, the owner of a building at Hollywood Blvd. and Highland on which a supergraphic was placed, was jailed for a weekend in lieu of $1,000,000 bond. (more…)

Billboard May Cost Kentucky $42 Million in Highway Funds

A billboard with the message “Hell is Real” has put the State of Kentucky in a precarious position with the U.S. Government regarding highway funding.

Under the Highway Beautification Act, states must monitor and enforce the statute or risk losing their national funding of their highway program, In Kentucky, that amounts to about $42 million per year. (more…)

Clear Channel Outdoor Stock Climbs After Fourth Quarter Results are Announced

Shares of Clear Channel Outdoor rose on March 12, following release of the company’s fourth quarter earnings, as the loss narrowed and revenue beat the forecast.

In the fourth quarter, the company’s loss was $56.8 million as compared to $3.03 billion in the same period last year. Analysts had expected revenue of $722 million for the period, but actual revenue was $763 million.

Some analysts raised the company from “neutral” to “outperform” as a result of the report.

More Cities Move To Ban Digital Billboards

St. Louis, Missouri just became the latest city to put a moratorium on the installation of new digital billboards. The moratorium runs for one year, and is timed to coincide with the release of a study on the distraction of digital billboards being researched by the U.S. government. (more…)
